BAFTA NEW LOOK GFX
Soho based moving graphics hot-shop, Creative Nuts, has just completed production of a new look for BAFTA.

The graphics package had its unveiling at the ORANGE BRITISH ACADEMY FILM AWARDS 2010 ceremony at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on Sunday the 21st February.
The graphics were used for TV broadcast in the UK and around the world as well as at the event in the opera house itself. BAFTA intend to repurpose the package for other awards ceremonies in the coming years.
Creative Nuts housed in boutique post production outfit The Joint's Wedgwood Mews studio, successfully won a competitive pitch lead by Creative Director, Steph Porter, to beat off major competition, securing the 'flagship' brief from production company Whizz Kid Entertainment.
The awards Executive Producer, Katherine Allen said, "We were looking for a whole new look for this year. It needed to be eye catching and exciting, drawing viewers into the programme with the expectation of a must-see live event. It's all about glamour, the joy of cinema, top stars, winners, the UK and of course the BAFTA awards themselves"
The work exploits Creative Nuts' multidisciplinary approach to the majority of their work. They used an HD Panasonic HPX500 to record a 'full colour' laser play light off smoke in a blacked out studio.
To get a slo-mo-cine style, shoot Director, Piers Helm, captured the laser's photons using the native 1080p60 'varicam' capability of the Panasonic and reduced the frame rate in post. The P2 HD tapeless workflow helped speed the ingestion to Quantel eQ for additional VFX, colour correction and compositing.
After four hours Producer, Nathan Leigh Horrocks, was warned to halt proceedings as the excessive smoke had cause the restaurant adjacent at Holborn Studios to be evacuated, luckily the shoots were in the 'virtual' can.
Creative Nuts asked film VFX shop Artem to scan in 3D an award mask that was provided by BAFTA during the production process. This complex point cloud was animated to give a close-up abstract look then speed ramped to reveal the familiar face of BAFTA.
"The greatest challenge of this brief was to create a small variation of sequences that we knew the audience would have to see over 20 times in the show. They had to be distinctive to draw attention to the nomination clips, yet at the same time not stick in your brain so you dreaded seeing them after the first few categories. Hopefully we have achieved this subtle balance, but we will only truly know once the show has aired" said Creative Nuts producer Nathan Leigh Horrocks.
The final sequences used many of the tools the Creative Nuts team have (ProTools, AfterFX, Final Cut Studio 3, Cinema4D and Quantel eQ) to create a sophisticated, glamourous and contemporary look befitting BAFTA's globally broadcast awards ceremony.
